Skid Control and Vehicle Dynamics

The course begins with a briefing from our Chief Instructor who explains exactly what happens when a car skids, and advice is given on how to avoid a dangerous skid situation on the road. Participants also learn how top class rally drivers avoid crashing in horrendous conditions. The final part of the presentation considers 'Active Driver Aids'. Today most cars are equipped with 'active' driver aids like ABS EBD and EBA, but what do they do? The instructor will explain how this equipment works and how it can help to avoid a collision in an emergency.
Demonstration
The instructor will demonstrate the driving techniques needed for each activity before the participants start the training.
Skid Pan Sessions
Drivers will learn how to control a vehicle in a skid. This involves controlling both understeer (front end skid) and oversteer (rear end skid) The skid pan course is also set out to emulate swerving and avoidance situations that could potentially instigate a skid when out on the road.
-
ABS Brake and Avoidance - On this session the participants will learn how to master the use of ABS (Anti-Lock Braking System) in an emergency. We set up a couple of avoidance exercises to demonstrate just what these systems are capable of.
On Road Defensive Driver Training
-
During the second part of the course, the driver will spend time driving on-road with one of our highly qualified Advanced Driving Instructors. They will be encouraged to control the position and speed of the vehicle safely and smoothly, adapting to the road and traffic conditions to make reasonable progress unobtrusively, with skill and responsibility. This skill requires a positive and courteous attitude and a high standard of driving competence based on concentration, effective all round observation, anticipation and planning.
Assessment
A written assessment of the drivers performance will be produced, if necessary highlighting areas where more training is required. Copies of the report are forwarded to the participants' line manager.
